A Fond Farewell from Judy Margles

December 28, 2023

Dear Friends,

As I retire as the director of OJMCHE I find myself filled with a heady blend of gratitude and nostalgia. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside so many of you, dedicated colleagues, passionate volunteers, and a steadfast community. Together we have committed to preserving the legacy of Oregon’s Jewish community, conveying the history of the Holocaust and connecting the Jewish experience to issues of diversity and discrimination against religious, ethnic, and marginalized communities. Together we have promoted dialogue and mutual understanding and done our best to honor those who endured unbearable atrocity. Thank you for our friendship and for your gratifying support, which has been the heart of our shared mission.

We sought to create a space where stories, both joyous and challenging, help to counter prejudice and foster dialogue. History – especially in times of division and conflict – still provides us a common ground—even if sometimes shaky and sometimes contested.

I will be the biggest cheerleader of incoming director Rebekah Sobel (who begins next Wednesday!) and I have no doubt that soon you will be too. Together let’s look forward to the continued success and evolution of our deeply loved institution as it continues to thrive, educate and inspire future generations to uphold the principles of truth and justice.

May OJMCHE remain a beacon of understanding, a place where diverse voices can come together in dialogue, and a sanctuary for the exploration of our shared humanity.

With affection, admiration, and appreciation,

Judy Margles
