This year we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 2004 dedication of the Oregon Holocaust Memorial. Please join us for a panel discussion about the making of the Memorial with some of the survivors and designers who brought it into being. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to learn about the thinking and effort that went into the Memorial (with audience questions welcome); many of the Holocaust survivors who were instrumental in creating the Memorial have passed away, and the Design Team also is beginning to be diminished.
Initiated in 1994 by a handful of women who had made new lives in Oregon after surviving the Holocaust, the Memorial was originally conceived as a modest installation at the Jewish Community Center. Their vision grew to become the extraordinary Memorial that has graced Washington Park for the last decade and a half, stewarded into existence by an ecumenical coalition of Jewish, Christian, and civic organizations.
The Oregon Holocaust Memorial was designed by a talented group of landscape architects, artists, writers, and designers to be a hallowed place for remembrance, reflection, and education, and it is visited annually by 5000 students and adults who participate in docent led tours. We hope that you will join us for this conversation in celebration of the Memorial’s 15th anniversary.
