This session is brought to you in partnership with Stockton University’s Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies program.
About the session: Genocide is often taught explicitly through the lens of its most violent and harmful actions, completely neglecting the process of justice and reconciliation. However, teaching how societies have redressed state-sponsored oppression and human rights abuses is critical to helping students understand how people take accountability for their wrongdoings and the measures that can be taken to restore dignity to the victims, make amends and repair relationships, and establish practices that aim to prevent future violations.
In this session, educators meet with Dr. Lauren Balasco and Dr. Mary Johnson from Stockton University’s Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide program to discuss a collection of readings on transitional justice abroad and in the United States. In addition to building content knowledge, educators will explore meaningful ways to engage students with this information. The program is open to any current K – 12 classroom educator is limited to twenty participants.
